Short bio

Professor Salinger is an Adjunct Professor at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture at the University of Tasmania. Domiciled in New Zealand, he is an internationally renowned expert in climate change trends past, present and future, and of climate variability and change on agriculture, forestry and fisheries. He has been at the leading edge of his science, as a lead IPCC author, and a skilled communicator on TV, in print and on radio. Professor Salinger is an IPCC 2007 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and has received several awards for lifetime contributions to climate science, agriculture and communication of climate and its impacts. He has been a president of the World Meteorological Organization’s Commission for Agricultural Meteorology where he has authored numerous Commission reports and technical notes. A prolific publisher his H-Index is 42.

General Research interests

Jim is a very active researcher as an agricultural climate scientist where he has worked with leading agricultural, horticultural, forestry and fisheries scientists both overseas and in New Zealand. His research areas cover climate change, present climate, seasonal climate and climate extremes.

Aims and activities related to the visit

Jim’s visit is as part of the Visiting Professor programme of the University of Florence.
During his visit he will give seminars for the courses:
Tropical climatology (Master Tropimundo - Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems)
Agronomy and soil science (Master in Natural Resources Management for Tropical Rural Development) and for the PhD in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
